Often thought of as a yellow cousin to the Red Delicious, the two only share a name, although the Golden Delicious is also a supermarket staple. These apples are typically medium to large with a pale flesh. They don’t brown as easily as some apples, making them good for salads. They are firm in texture, having a subdued sweetness with a hint of honey. It originated from a chance seedling in West Virginia in the 1890’s. Their sweetness is enhanced when allowed to ripen to its natural golden color before harvesting. It is a versatile apple, good for eating and baking.
